Connecting technology with people
ICT has the potential to be a key transformational technology to improve sustainability and quality of life. In Smart Cities and Communities, this goal is achieved by engaging the whole community (citizens, administrations, enterprises) in a living lab for experimenting innovative solutions able to meet the important societal challenges that cities and communities are facing.
The mission of FBK in this context is to (co-)design, develop and experiment a Smart Cities and Communities platform, covering not only the technological aspects, but also the methodological and societal ones. The platform has the goal of supporting a wide range of solutions aiming at improving sustainability of cities and territories, efficiency of public administration, and quality of life of citizens; these solutions include new modalities for on-line service delivery, new communication and collaboration modalities between citizens and public administration; innovative city – and territory – sensing and analysis approaches; new IT solutions to help facing societal challenges such as sustainable mobility, inclusion, social cohesion.
The platform intends to offer a full-stack support for these solutions, covering all technological levels (Internet of Things, Internet of Data, Internet of Services, Internet of Humans, according to the Next Generation Internet model), and all phases on the value chain (Research > Co-Design > Development > Integration > Piloting > Production).
- For citizens: concrete solutions for everyday’s life and opportunity to participate to innovation.
- For public administrations: FBK as “digital companion” in projects and joint living labs.
- For companies: co-innovation labs and living labs to transform knowledge in innovation.
- For researchers and innovators: open platform (open data, open source, open services, open hardware, open research, open innovation…) to apply and mature research results.
- Open Government: improve transparency, participation and collaboration between public administrations, citizens and companies; support deliver y of more usable and effective e-services; promote usage of digital common goods.
- Mobility: more integrated and sustainable mobility through innovative ICT tools and active engagement of citizens.
- Sustainability: work towards an environmentally, socially, and economically healthy and resilient cities and territories for present and future citizens.
- School: facilitate communication and cooperation among all actors of the education eco-system, analyze educational offer , curricula and competences, improve efficiency of the educational system, both in a day-to-day and in a life-long perspective.
- City Sensing: pervasive, collaborative, multi-source, multi-level monitoring of the city, to help administrators and citizens understand their city and how it evolves.
- Trento Smart City Lab. A living lab in the Vela neighborhood of Trento, where a full stack deployment of FBK’s Next Generation Internet – from sensors and IoT to data and service platforms, together with the possibility to engage citizens in smart city initiative, offers an ideal context to test innovative solutions before scale-up and to enable bottom-up innovation.
- STARDUST (Holistic and integrated urban model for smart cities) 2017-2022, EC-H2020 SCC-1 project. The objective is to pave the way towards the transformation of the carbon supplied cities into Smart, high efficient, intelligent and citizen oriented cities, developing urban technical green solutions and innovative business models, integrating the domains of buildings, mobility and efficient energy through ICT, testing and validating these solutions, enabling their fast roll out in the market. In this project, Trento is one of the lighhouse pilot citis and FBK is cross-city responsbile of the ICT theme.
- CLIMB – Children’s Autonomous Mobility. This initiative, in collaboration with Comune di Trento, aims at promoting children’s independent and active mobility. The challenge is to make children mobility a safe, social and fun experience by exploiting transformative ICT technologies to: i) integrate all relevant crowd/open services and data available in the neighborhood, ii) provide wearable devices and Apps for the community of end-users to organize, manage, and monitor children daily mobility and iii) make use of gamification techniques to motivate and reward virtuous mobility behaviors and make children mobility a playful experience. CLIMB solutions are currently exploited by various schools in Trento (8 schools, more than 1000 children).
